Turn A Gundam, from studio Sunrise

Bandai Entertainment acquires Turn A Gundam, Tales of the Abyss: At Comic-Con International, the North American anime distributor Bandai Entertainment announced it has acquired licenses for the Yoshiyuki Tomino-directed 20th Anniversary Gundam project Turn A Gundam (1999), as well as the 26-episode RPG adaptation Tales of the Abyss (2008). As excited as I am to see Turn A finally get a DVD release, it pretty much makes no sense for Bandai to bring over a decade-old installment in a franchise with a historically poor sales record in the US. [Source: ANN]

Vertical acquires Lychee Light Club: Vertical's panel at Comic-Con International featured the revelation of the company's newest manga license — Lychee Light Club (2005) by Usamaru Furuya. The series, which ran in seinen magazine Manga Erotics F, follows the story of a group of boys who create a machine to seek out beautiful women of the world, only to find that it has become sentient! The single-volume release is set to ship on April 29, 2011. [Source: ANN]

Highschool of the Dead by Daisuki Sato

Yen Press licenses Highschool of the Dead, Betrayal Knows My Name, The Bride's Stories, and Higurashi – Demon Exposing Arc: Manga distributor Yen Press announced a number of new manga at Comic-Con, namely Highschool of the Dead by Daisuke Satō and Shoji Sato, Betrayal Knows My Name, a.k.a. UraBoku, by Hotaru Odagiri, The Bride's Stories by Kaoru Mori, and Higurashi: When They Cry Demon-Exposing Arc by En Kitou. [Source: ANN]

Manga scanlation aggregator OneManga shuts down: It would seem that the coalition of US and Japanese manga publishers who joined together last month to fight piracy has actually struck a chord with fan-run scanlation sites. OneManga, one of the largest aggregators of manga scanlations, has announced that they "have decided to abide by [the publishers'] wishes, and remove all manga content (regardless of licensing status) from the site." The announcement has sparked widespread rage from manga readers who have relied on the site for up-to-date (albeit illegal) translations of their favorite series. I'm personally glad to see the site go, as it aggregated many licensed manga series, but it will be a shame to lose a source of obscure, unlicensed manga. [Source: ANN]

Square Enix announces e-manga distribution service: In response to the previously mentioned fight against scanlations, Square Enix recently announced their plan to legally distribute manga online, which will — in theory — help alleviate the perceived drought of online manga caused by the shutdown of scanlation sites. The Japanese publisher's site already features free downloads of the first chapters of Fullmetal Alchemist, Soul Eater, Black Butler, and O-Parts Hunter, while it lists The Record of a Fallen Vampire, Pandora Hearts, Sumomomo Momomo, and Spiral: Bonds of Reasoning as "Coming Soon." Square Enix has made it clear that the paid subscription service may not feature all of those manga series when it launches in fall 2010. [Source: ANN]

E3 2010: Sony conference reveals Move details, Steam on PS3, PlayStation Plus

Sony's press conference certainly ran a little bit too long for my taste, but it was much, much more entertaining and useful than Microsoft's trainwreck just a day earlier. If you're into audio rather than text, why not listen to our Sony press conference wrap-up podcast with me, Elliot, and Kit? Or, if you're a text guy/girl, head after the break to check out all of the details on the new PlayStation Move motion control accessory, the surprising announcement of the integration of digital distribution service Steam on PlayStation 3, and Sony's new Xbox Live-esque premium subscription service for PSN. Either way, it's sure to take less time than the actual conference.

As Nintendo wisely did with their press conference, Sony left one main presenter in charge of the proceedings, which was Jack Tretton, President of Sony Computer Entertainment America, in their case. Early on in the conference, Tretton discussed Sony's dedication to 3-D gaming, showcasing gameplay footage (and a Feburary 2011 release date) from Killzone 3. Most importantly, though, the PlayStation 3's 3-D capabilities will only work if you a) buy a 3-D television and b) buy 3-D glasses. With the unveiling of Nintendo's 3DS less than three hours prior, it was pretty difficult to take any claims of traditional 3-D seriously.

Speaking of major changes to the PS3, Sony simply wouldn't stop talking about PlayStation Move, the new motion control device that uses a glowing ball at the end of what is essentially a Wiimote to track movement in 3-D space. The Move wand itself will hit stores in the fall of this year: September 15 in North America, September 19 in Europe, and October 21 in Japan. In terms of pricing, I was surprised to see fully fleshed-out details from Sony, including prices for the wand ($49.99), the suspiciously-similar-to-the-Wii-Nunchuck "navigation controller" ($29.99), a bundle with the Eye camera, Move controller, and Sports Champions game ($99.99), and finally a bundle containing the contents of that bundle with a PS3 ($499.99).

Yes, that's right, you have to purchase three accessories the wand, navigation controller, and Eye camera to play a first-person shooter like, say, Killzone 3, with the Move. And as luck would have it, Killzone 3, Ruse, NBA 2K11, Time Crisis, and Echochrome will all have Move functionality on launch day, while games like Resident Evil 5 will receive software updates patching in the optional Move controls.

Sony is also now poised to offer a premium subscription service on the PlayStation Network (PSN) called "PlayStation Plus" that will provide "exclusive digital content" such as preferred early demos, discounts on products in the PSN store, early access to betas, and even some free game downloads. The service will cost $49.99 for a year and $17.99 for three months, very much like Microsoft's Xbox Live Gold service, but PSN gamers can still play online without subscribing to PlayStation Plus. PlayStation Plus will be available "later this month."

To promote their slate of third-party titles, Sony brought in EA Chief Operating Officer John Schappert, who announced "unprecedented support" for the PlayStation 3, including, um, "exclusive, limited-edition, PS3-only" versions of Dead Space 2 and the Medal of Honor reboot? That sounds pretty precedented if you ask me. After a few more trailers from EA, we were left with release dates for Dead Space 2 (January 25, 2011) and Medal of Honor (October 12, 2010) as well as confirmation of "unlockable beards" in the latter. Yes, my friends. He said UNLOCKABLE BEARDS.

Finally, the most important announcement of all to many gamers, even those who don't own PS3s: Gabe Newell of Valve stepped onto the stage and put down many of his gripes with the PS3 (while, I can only assume, simultaneously picking up a large bag of money) in order to announce that PC/Mac digital download system Steam will be launching on the PlayStation 3. We don't quite know how it's going to work, or even if your games purchased on PC will carry over to PS3, but we do know that Portal 2 will be coming out on it! The trailer shows some serious promise, but I'm going to need to see more before I'm sure if I'm interested or not.

In the balance of the conference, Sony managed to announce "PS3-exclusive day-one content for Mafia 2," a PS3-exclusive pack of missions and a November 16, 2010 release date for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, a November 2, 2010 release date for Gran Turismo 5, and finally ... a new game in the Twisted Metal franchise on the PlayStation 3. Phew! Overall, the press conference felt much more disjointed than Nintendo's, since most of the announcements were cut up among multiple speakers and trailers, but it contained enough information to keep hardcore and casual audiences interested (at least until they fell into a coma from sitting way too long at one conference).

(Runtime: 18 minutes)

Phew, that was some press conference. After Microsoft's brutally awkward conference yesterday, a lot of us were left wondering if video games truly had all fell into the dreadful mediocrity of motion-control gimmicks. Boy, did Nintendo prove us wrong! (I know, who would've guessed THAT, right?)

Reggie Fils-Aime, president of the North American division of the game publisher and console manufacturer unveiled new title after new title in a rapid-fire series of announcements, surely sating the appetites of even the most hardcore Nintendo fanboys. First off, legendary designer Shigeru Miyamoto showed off the new Wii Zelda title, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. During an admittedly awkward demonstration (held up by so-called "interference" with the Wii's motion-sensing capabilities), Miyamoto gave us a glimpse into the new control scheme in which the sword is mapped to the Wiimote and the shield is mapped to the nunchuck and the graphical style, which marries the matured designs of Twilight Princess to the cel shading of The Wind Waker while presumably running on the Super Mario Galaxy graphics engine. At the very end of the presentation, Miyamoto tried his very best to gracefully tell the audience that Skyward Sword still needs a lot of work done, and will take until 2011 before it's finished.

But it wasn't long before Reggie launched into what we all expected from a Nintendo presentation casual games. However, much to my surprise, we only saw two new casual games: Mario Sports Mix (think Wii Sports with Mario) and Wii Party (think Mario Party with Miis). The former will hit shelves sometime in 2011, while Reggie promised that we'll see the latter this holiday season. Meanwhile, Ubisoft presented a trailer for Just Dance 2 on the Wii, which will hit this fall.

On the third party front, Nintendo didn't have very much to show off, though the titles themselves were certainly worth talking about. First is a remake (or maybe it's a sequel) of Goldeneye, the beloved Nintendo 64 first-person shooter that has stuck in many gamers' minds as a reminder of the golden days (har har) of Nintendo's consoles. After that was Disney's Epic Mickey, featuring a fascinating discussion of the importance of play style from designer Warren Specter. The game will feature choices between solving puzzles by creating or destroying the environment, which Specter hopes will provide a rich experience that is different for every player.

Meanwhile, Nintendo unveiled the subtitle, a new trailer, and a 2010 holiday season release date for their previously announced Golden Sun DS sequel, now entitled Golden Sun: Dark Dawn. Additionally, the Wii will see the release of Kirby's Epic Yarn, the first Kirby console game since the Gamecube's Kirby Air Ride (2003) and the first side-scrolling console Kirby game since Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (2000) on yes my friends the Nintendo 64. Kirby's Epic Yarn, which sports an interesting new art style reminiscent of the Super Nintendo's Kirby's Dream Land 3 (1997), is already prepped for release this fall. We also got a trailer for the Team Ninja-developed Metroid: Other M, which will arrive on August 31.

Last but certainly not least, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata stepped on stage to present the Nintendo 3DS, a successor to the DS that features a touch screen on the bottom and a slightly larger 3-D screen on the top half (It displays 3-D WITHOUT glasses). The left side of the handheld has a "slide pad" that acts as an analog stick, the insides have a motion sensor and a gyro sensor, and the system can display more powerful graphics than the current DS models. Additionally, the front of the device features two cameras, allowing the 3DS to take 3-D photographs. On the software side of things, Iwata confirmed that the 3DS is capable of playing 3-D Hollywood movies, and Nintendo has already partnered with Disney, Warner Bros., and Dreamworks to provide that content. Finally, a slew of third-party developers, including CAPCOM, EA, Harmonix, Konami, Level-5, and Ubisoft, have signed on to create games for the system, and some of the confirmed games (first- and third-party) are listed below:

  • Kid Icarus: Uprising from Kirby/Smash Bros. developer Masahiro Sakurai and Sora Ltd.
  • A new Nintendogs game from Miyamoto
  • a Metal Gear Solid game from Kojima himself
  • an Assassin's Creed game from Ubisoft
  • a "completely original Resident Evil game" from CAPCOM

Overall, I was very impressed with Nintendo's press conference. While a lot of the technology (3DS, swordfighting with Wii MotionPlus) still seems a little wonky or hazy [[EDIT: and I was very disappointed in the continued lack of any new IPs]], their presentation was refreshing in how to-the-point it was. Nintendo made it clear much moreso than Microsoft did with their awful Kinect presentations that this was all about games, and whether you are interested in their titles or not, it's hard to deny that they put on a damn good show.

Microsoft unveiled more details on their new motion-control peripheral, the Kinect (the original Project Natal design is pictured here).

(Runtime: 22 minutes)

It's a little late, but I've got all of the tantalizing news from Microsoft's awful E3 press conference right here in this post, complete with a brief, unedited podcast roundup (starring both me and Elliot). Well, let's get on with the show.

It's hard to imagine that it's been a full year since we first heard about Microsoft's Project Natal, but today we were given a glimpse into a more fully-featured version of the revolutionary, controller-free Xbox 360 interface, now renamed "Kinect," presumably to tie into Microsoft's new phone, the Kin. The project has now become a slightly new interface for the Xbox 360, complete with voice commands and hand gesture-controlled menus. Kinect will launch worldwide this fall, specifically in North America on November 4, 2010.

Granted, most of the games shown at the conference seemed to simply be clones of Wii games, including a sports pack, a cart racer, and even the Wii Fit-esque Your Shape: Fitness Evolved from Ubisoft. Meanwhile, Microsoft also showed off non-game features (actually, a lot of them) that take advantage of the microphone and camera in Kinect. These include a video chat application (demoed by the MOST AWKWARD engineer and her twin sister), new interfaces for interacting with video and music content, and an ESPN application featuring videos of sporting events. [[EDIT: Among some of the third-party games available for the new peripheral are a new Forza racing game (available in 2011) and an MTV Games-produced, Harmonix-developed dancing game.]]

Oh yeah, there were some games there too. We saw a previously-released trailer for Activision and Treyarch's Call of Duty: Black Ops, coupled with an announcement that Microsoft has signed an "exclusive, multi-year agreement with Activision" that will result in all Call of Duty games, map packs, and expansions releasing first on the Xbox 360 through 2012. [[EDIT: Of course, Halo: Reach was there, with a video of its single-player campaign (now with GIRL Spartans!).]] Cliff Bleszinski, also known as "CliffyB," got up on the stage early on to show off Gears of War 3 (spoiler: it's more Gears of War) and Hideo Kojima showed off one of the highlights of the conference: a new trailer for the Raiden-centric game Metal Gear Solid Rising. Apparently this game is about cutting. Cutting everything from limbs to brick support beams to watermelons.

Last but not least, Microsoft announced their new Xbox 360 model (often called the "Xbox 360 Slim" by consumers and press), which is smaller and features built-in Wi-Fi and a 250GB hard drive for the same price as the current Elite model. And it launches ... today? Just like the Sega Saturn? Well OK, way to follow in the footsteps of one of the industry's greatest success stories. But that just wasn't enough everyone in the audience was also given a free Xbox 360, a move mirroring Oprah Winfrey's now-classic "and you get a car" event that left most of the press conference's audience speechless and somewhat confused.

Ani-Gamers Podcast #021 – The ANN Preview Guide

Topics: , ,

Hosts: Evan "Vampt Vo" Minto, Zac Bertschy, Sean Russell
Topic: The Anime News Network's editorial choice to cover fansubbed anime in their Fall Preview Guide

To wash down our long discussion of digital distribution last episode, this time we've got an interview with Zac Bertschy, Executive Editor at the Anime News Network, about a related topic: fansubs. Specifically, my questions revolved around ANN's choice to cover anime that has not been licensed or legally released in America in their Preview Guide a decision which necessitates the use by ANN's paid writers of illegally distributed fansubs. Sean Russell of Anime 3000 kindly recorded the discussion and contributed some of his own thoughts as well. If you've got an opinion on the issue, don't be afraid to let us know in the comments section or through email.

Next episode I'll probably post something that I recorded at New York Anime Festival: either the Yoshiyuki Tomino Question & Answer session or a brief podcast episode with Erin and Noah of the Ninja Consultant Podcast.

[0:02:24] Discussion: Evan and Sean question Zac about the Anime News Network Preview Guide. Zac begins with his own description of how the guide got started, but quickly the discussion turns toward a consideration of what ANN and other anime outlets need to do to both accurately cover issues related to fandom and support legal methods of distribution. Some believe that news organizations need to report on content regardless of the illegality involved in attaining it, while others believe that, in order to remain a credible source, these organizations should completely shun illegal modes of distribution like fansubs. What do you think?

Spring is finally in full swing here on the East Coast, bringing with it green trees, blue skies, chirping birds, and all of those things that don't really bring out a particularly strong impulse to sit inside and punch letters into a computer. But how could we possibly resist our inner bloggers, when there's so much to write about? In the coming weeks, we've got convention reports, long-overdue feature articles, and of course, Ink's new column – Fullmetal Alchemist: The Brotherhood Diaries!

Outside of that, I've just settled my plans for my first ever weekend at Otakon in Baltimore, where you should be able to find Ink, Karl, and I come this July. And in the next week, you just might see a new staff member on the team, and a special promotion for a current one. Stay tuned for all the fantastic things up ahead.

If you weren't paying attention, this month had some great developments in anime, with the streaming of tons of new spring season anime series (discussed in Podcast #014), as well as the first in what will hopefully be a major trend of free manga online – Viz's preview of Rumiko Takahashi's Rin-ne. We also had some bittersweet news of Will Wright's leaving EA, and tragedy in CPM's bankruptcy. Two anime reviews, a comic book review, CPAC 2009 coverage, and TWO chances to win Schoolgirl Milky Crisis (Enter the blog contest and the podcast contest) round off a fantastic month here at Ani-Gamers.

Hey there, readers. I hope you've been enjoying the posts over the last few weeks, despite the lower frequency of updates. I've tried to make sure that, since we're putting out less articles a week, the ones that we do put out are of better quality, so that you're still getting some good stuff from us week after week. On that topic, there are some nice feature articles in the pipeline that might finally see the light of day next month, so definitely watch out for those. Plus, we've got a contest coming up, and one has already started over on the Ani-Gamers Podcast.

In March, we had a bunch of reviews, for 5 Centimeters Per Second, the Afro Samurai video game, and much more. Some anime and game news trickled in as well, with news of Bioshock 2 and the stateside release date of Miyazaki's Ponyo movie. I missed my chance last week, but I might do a News Briefs post soon to round up our late coverage of the Game Developers Conference. Till next time, dear readers!

Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea

Wow, I blink and all the news flies past me. In the last couple weeks, we've seen some nice expansion of the anime industry with video distribution and theatrical plans announced for a whole slew of new shows. First off is today's announcement from Disney of a release date for Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea, the newest anime movie from award-winning director Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. Disney will release film in a currently unspecified number of theaters on August 14, 2009, the only week when it will face no major box office competition in the animation category. I haven't gotten a chance to see Ponyo yet (seeing as I don't live in Japan and didn't indulge in fansubs), but it looks like a movie that can really sell to the American family audience. Make sure you support Ponyo by going out to see it this summer!

In celebration of Hulu's first birthday, FUNimation has announced three new titles that will stream on the website, now the second-most-popular video streaming site (behind only YouTube). Those three titles are the baseball anime Big Windup (a.k.a. Ookiku Furikabutte), the sci-fi Heroic Age, and the full-length film Origin: Spirits of the Past. Clarissa of the Anime World Order podcast is a pretty big fan of Big Windup, and Uncle Yo recently gushed over Origin in an Ani-Gamers review, so I'm excited that FUNi has given us a chance to watch these titles for free.

Big Windup (Ookiku Furikabutte)

On the topic of GDH (Gonzo Digital Holdings, the studio behind Origin), FUNimation has finally solidified a new deal with the struggling studio, which cut its anime production in half just a few months ago in response to economic and industry pressures. The company has been attempting to reap a profit from streaming its shows for free on websites like CrunchyRoll, but most reports are saying that the endeavor has not brought in much money for Gonzo. Oddly enough, the move to CrunchyRoll was seen by many as a betrayal of FUNimation, which has so often handled the American distribution of Gonzo's properties, but was now out of the loop as the studio dealt directly with video distributors.

In response, the apparently forgiving (or just smart) folks at FUNimation have agreed to pair up with GDH and take over North American distribution for all of its properties. That includes video streaming sites, presumaly meaning that FUNi would regain its place as the middleman between GDH and CrunchyRoll, which Hulu would probably also see an increase in Gonzo titles hosted on its service. The first titles to be taken over by FUNimation are The Tower of Druaga and Blassreiter, the first series that GDH ever broadcast simultaneously.

I think that it is simply amazing that Gonzo took such a risk in moving to a simultaneous broadcast, streaming video model, and despite their losses, were able to hold out until this new development. Now FUNimation has followed in GDH's footsteps and even supported the studio, and the entire anime industry (FUNi pretty much controls the whole thing) is finally participating heavily in the video distribution market – the true future of the industry in this blogger's opinion.

Finally, AD Vision, once the most preeminent anime distributor in the country, now nearly license-less and struggling to maintain relevance, has put some of its Anime Network titles on the iTunes store. While I don't think that this will have a big effect on the company's fortunes, it should be able to provide some income from their anime properties, since the sales through the iTunes Store are almost pure profit. The titles now available for download are Angelic Layer, Mahoromatic, Pet Shop of Horrors, Saiyuki, and Tsukihime.

And with that, I think that I can confidently say that the anime industry is finally moving in the right direction, with video streaming, simultaneous broadcasts, and direct downloads all options for those who want to watch their anime for free or cheap online (and without fansubs). Now that's change we can believe in. (I couldn't help it!)

February was Comic Con month for us here at Ani-Gamers, with news, previews, and more from the massive New York Comic Con 2009 coming out throughout the month. (Don't forget to read my convention report!) Now that I've exhausted most of my NYCC content, we should be back to regularly scheduled programming in the future (excepting a few non-Comic Con-specific feature articles that I researched while at the con).

Other than that, I'm also looking to our future as a moneymaking blog by figuring out ways to optimize our ad structure so that I can pay our current and future staffers. Oh, and you might notice that the "On Deck" section is filling up down there. I've been meaning to weed through some of our old reviews (especially some of Karl's) for a while now, so expect them to be published pretty frequently in the coming weeks while I prepare some new feature articles.

February was fun, but March is bringing with it Castle Point Anime Convention, where Ink and I will be hosting an "Anime Blogging" panel. More details on that one as we prepare for the con. Thanks for reading, and make sure to check out all of this month's posts after the break.

Nintendo's DS redesign: the DSi

So, I've been a little absent lately, mostly due to some personal stuff mixed with the phenomenal task of organizing and writing up the piles of stuff that I still have left over from Comic Con. (Note to self: don't take on so many articles that your coverage will only be complete a full month after the convention.) Since I haven't been up on my normal (i.e. non-Comic Con-related) news in the past few weeks, I've compiled all of the big articles that you might have missed into this post.

First off, FUNimation picked up a bunch of new licenses back in the middle of the month. Their new titles include Bamboo Blade, El Cazador De La Bruja, My Bride Is A Mermaid, Rin ~ Daughters of Mnemosyne, and three Gonzo shows: Blassreiter, the infamous Dragonaut, and the quite well-received Tower of Druaga. (Read Uncle Yo's reviews of Druaga and Mnemosyne for more info on the shows!) It's interesting that FUNi is continuing to license Gonzo shows left and right despite Gonzo essentially spitting in the face of American distributors by pushing out Druaga and Blassreiter directly through CrunchyRoll. Apparently FUNi thinks that Gonzo giving free promotion for a show is at least a little better than Johnny McFansubber doing it.

Speaking of CrunchyRoll, the website announced a couple of days ago that in celebration of "Global Shinkai Day," they will be streaming three of director Makoto Shinkai's works (5 Centimeters Per Second, Voices of a Distant Star, and The Place Promised In Our Early Days) on Saturday, February 28 for 24 hours only. I've yet to experience Shinkai's critically-acclaimed anime, so I'll definitely be taking advantage of that limited time offer come Saturday to watch 5 Centimeters Per Second, a movie that is unfortunately stuck in limbo, as no North American anime distributor has officially picked it up yet.

Best Buy logo

Best Buy is cutting down on their in-store anime selection due to the economic situation, but it's not all bad news for anime fans. Select stores will be holding 50% off sales, which will make that Haruhi boxset that you haven't bought yet seem so. much. jucier. ANN has a preliminary list of participating stores, but it's still subject to change.

For those of you who watched the Oscars, you might have noticed that when La Maison En Petits Cubes won the award for Best Animated Short Film, it was not a French animator who stood up to take the award. That's because despite it's extremely French name, Cubes is actually an anime, created by Japanese director and writer Kunio Kato. This marks the second Oscar win for an anime, and the first in the Animated Short Film Category. (Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away won for Best Animated Picture in 2003.)

Finally, on the video game front, Nintendo has announced a release date for the DSi, the third redesign of the bestselling DS platform. The system will launch in the United States on April 5, 2009 in two colors (blue and black) and for an MSRP of $169.99. It will sell millions and will top the NPD charts for months on end, despite the fact that it provides no significant gameplay upgrades to the DS Lite. Such is life in this Nintendo-world of ours...

This Month in Ani-Gamers ~ January 2009

Hey there, welcome to the first "This Month in Ani-Gamers" post. Unlike our previous column, "This Week in Ani-Gamers," I'll now be posting the latest stories on a monthly basis, along with some editorial commentary on where the site is headed.

On to business. In January, Ani-Gamers kicked off its first month of the year with a high concentration of editorial content like reviews, columns, and features. We announced our Top 3 Anime, Manga, and Games of the Year, and even talked about our favorite titles in the two-part Ani-Gamers Podcast #011 (part 1, part 2). Rounding it all off, Ink finally posted his second Otakudemia column, providing a brilliant look at Speed Grapher's noir themes. And yes, there was some big news, such as the announcement of the Cowboy Bebop Hollywood movie and the call to arms for Kamina as MTV's Baddest Badass.

In the future, Ani-Gamers will be moving toward a slightly more opinion-based model, meaning that we will balance our simple news posts with some more opinion content such as reviews, critiques, and columns. Will news go away? Of course not! How will our readers stay up-to-date with current events in geekdom without reading our site? Actually, don't answer that one.

Anyway, the Super Bowl party is getting started around here, so I've gotta take a break from blogging to pretend that I care about any football game that doesn't feature the Devil Bats. In the meantime, check out the month's posts after the break.

Carl Horn, Jason Thompson respond to manga obscenity case

Topics: , , , ,
Comic Book Legal Defense Fund

Iowa resident and manga fan Christopher Handley has been having a rather unpleasant two years. In May of 2006, Handley ordered a package from Japan containing "inappropriate" manga (namely yaoi and lolicon). When the postal inspector intercepted his package and applied for a warrant, Mr. Handley was followed home by police, who searched his home and found a handful of "obscene" images among his collection of more than 1,200 comics.

Now Mr. Handley, 38, is being tried in the Iowa court system for supposed violations of the PROTECT Act, which provides for up to twenty years in prison for obscenity violations. The Comic Book Defense Fund, known for their vigorous protection of the First Amendment rights of comic book retailers and creators, have agreed to help defend Mr. Handley in the first recorded case in which a private citizen has been accused of obscenity in the privacy of his own home.

Carl Gustav Horn (of Dark Horse) and Jason Thompson (of Otaku USA), two of the most respected names in the manga industry, contacted Anime News Network regarding Christopher Handley's trial. They have published two lengthy editorials begging manga fans to understand the implications of a guilty verdict in Handley's case and, if possible, to donate to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. The articles are great reads for all manga fans who are interested in their industry's continued survival - which is hopefully each and every one of you. Please read these fantastic articles, and consider a donation to the CBLDF.

News Briefs - Halo 3: Recon & Marvel anime details

Topics: , ,
Halo 3: Recon

A few months ago we reported Madhouse's plans for re-envisioning Marvel superheroes, and just last month we relayed the sequel-licious info about Bungie's newest Microsoft Games Studios collaboration: a Halo spinoff called Halo 3: Recon. This week, we received confirmation of the Marvel anime's worldwide release alongside news of Halo 3: Recon being more like an... "expansion pack"? Uh oh.

Head past the break for all the goodies.

Game Informer: Halo 3 Recon '3 to 5' hours, earn Recon armor / GI: Halo 3 Recon is open-world (Joystiq): According to the latest issue of GameInformer magazine, Halo 3: Recon will not be "a $60 game" and will bemore like "a three to five-hour expansion pack." Not just that, but according to the article, Recon is also an "open-world" title, meaning that Bungie is ditching the linear, run-and-gun FPS gameplay of the previous Halo games. Even though users will be able to acquire the rare, Bungie staff-only "Recon Armor" through the game, I question the validity of a "three to five-hour" "open-world" title. In a "real" open-world game, you spend three to five hours in your inventory alone!

Sony to Release Madhouse's Marvel Hero Anime Worldwide (Anime News Network): Madhouse's anime adaptations of Marvel superheroes will not only be releasing in Japan. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will distribute the series in America after the Iron Man and Wolverine series premiere on Japanese television in Spring 2009. Without question this is Marvel's attempt to fight the popularity of animated feature Batman: Gotham Knight (read Uncle Yo's review). The DVD - propelled by The Dark Knight, no doubt - soared to the top of the anime sales charts in the past months, giving Warner Bros. a significant edge over Sony in the casual anime market.

News Briefs - Assassin's Creed sequel, PRO-IP, and MGS4 on 360

Topics: , , , , ,
Metal Gear Solid?! On Xbox 360?!

Welcome to our newest little project here at Ani-Gamers. For a new way of covering the news, we will now be changing our format so that bigger news stories get bigger coverage, and smaller news stories are placed in these "News Briefs" articles. After the break you'll find links to news articles and quick summaries for those of you too pressed for time (read: lazy) to click through and check them out.

Today, we've got an interesting slip of the tongue that may have just confirmed Ubisoft's current development of Assassin's Creed 2, Konami's continuing desire to bring Metal Gear Solid 4 to the Xbox 360, and a new national law that might spell doom for internet pirates everywhere. Read more after the break!

Assassin's Creed's Altair learns to swim for future project (Joystiq): In an interview with AusGamer, David Wilkinson (animation director for Prince of Persia) was talking about Alex Drouin, animation director for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and Assassin's Creed, when he was asked what Drouin is up to now. Wilkinson, in a classic moment of slipped tongues, replied, "He's busy making Altair even more beautiful. Last thing I saw him do was getting Altair to swim." There's pretty much nothing that you can glean from this except that there is a sequel to Assassin's Creed coming (as if that wasn't clear), and that the main character Altair will indeed be able to swim this time around.

U.S. Copyright Law That Allows Equipment Seizures Signed (Anime News Network): President George W. Bush recently signed into law a bill called PRO-IP (Prioritizing Resources and Organization for Intellectual Property), which will create a position known as the "Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator," in charge of tracking down and dealing with copyright infringers, much in a similar fashion to the War on Drugs.

An earlier version of the bill would have allowed the government to sue on behalf of rights holders, something that would put anime fansubbing in grave, grave danger. The most important point about the law is that it allows the government to seize any and all equipment (i.e. your computer) if there is evidence of copyright infringement, and sue again if any more infringing material is found therein.

Konami: 'We're actively looking' into MGS4 on Xbox 360 (Joystiq): According to Japanese investment research firm Morningstar, game developer Konami is "actively looking into a [Metal Gear Solid 4] release for the Xbox 360." We've known for a while that the developers of the hit game were thinking of bringing it over to the Xbox 360, but the recent multi-console movement among big games like Final Fantasy XIII just might push Konami to finally make the jump.

NYAF08: Media Blasters/Del Rey/ANN panel reports [EDIT 2]

Topics: , , ,
Meredith and Joe from Media Blasters

Surprisingly, Saturday at the New York Anime Festival was not as hectic as Friday was. With more panel time during the day and hence more time between panels, it was much easier for my bloggers-in-crime (Brad, Gia, Scott) and I to get from panel to panel and still have time for, you know, food and actually enjoying ourselves.

Media Blasters

Joe Chagan and Merideth Mulroney from Media Blasters began their panel with two points; points which would become the center of their entire message:

  • We're still in business!
  • We have an announcement, but our boss won't let us tell you.

Other than that, the two friendly representatives opened themselves up for questions, giving surprisingly candid and telling answers that you can only get from Media Blasters and their unique marketing style. First off, on Media Blasters' solvency in the dangerous climate of today's anime market, Merideth reminded us that the company is "holding our own because we're feisty." The "big announcement" was hinted at being something involving a new title (i.e. NOT retro) that will make you go "holy crap, THAT ONE?"

When asked about a Blu-ray release for MB's remaster of Berserk, Merideth reminded us that regardless of high-def quality, "16mm is 16mm." She also clarified that the main reason for Seirei no Moribito's DVD release delay is that she still doesn't have all of the original artwork for the show after six months of waiting. Finally, the reps also plugged MB's new online card game Alteil (preview coming soon), and let us know that the company is/was interested in picking up Cream Lemon, Turn A Gundam, and Black Lagoon.

Media Blasters denies any plans for a unified anime channel with other companies due to the immense costs of running a television channel. They also say that a burn-on-demand plan will not work for a small company like Media Blasters until someone else makes a system that they can adapt for their own needs.

Del Rey

Ali on the left of the Del Rey panel

Unlike AnimeNEXT, at this Del Rey panel the company was up a proverbial creek without a not-so-proverbial Dallas Middaugh. Del Rey's charismatic Associate Publisher was unable to come to the convention due to previous engagements (i.e. his honeymoon), so standing in for him was the equally (if not more) charismatic Ali T. Kokmen. Del Rey, friend of the press, gave us the new announcements rapid-fire at the beginning of the panel, without all of that annoying suspense of other industry panels.

  • Del Rey is teaming up with Cartoon Network, bringing Ben10 and Bakugan film comics and light novels to stores. Cue Bakugan trailer with terrrrrible theme music. "Fight for what's right before it's gone! This is Bakugan!"
  • The first Bakugan film comic is in December 2008, and the second is in March 2009. An original manga is coming in Summer 2009.
  • Ben10 is getting the first film comic release in April 2009, with the original manga in November of 2009.
  • Moyasimon: Tales of Agriculture in Fall 2009 - It's about cute bacteria. And it's apparently educational. AWO complained that it wasn't licensed. TAKE THAT!
  • Tsubasa Character Guide 2 in Summer 2009 - Yeah, it's another one. It covers volumes 8-14.
  • Amefurashi in July 2009 - From the creator of Haridama: Magic Cram School and Venus vs. Virus, it looks alright.
  • Maid War Chronicles in May 2009 - The illustrator is from Mao-chan. It's about fighting maids. You know you want it.

Most of the rest of the panel was spent answering questions and throwing squishy gavels at the audience to promote Del Rey's new Phoenix Wright manga license. Trust me, you had to be there for some of Ali's lines. Why is Del Rey so gosh darn awesome asks Japanator reader KuronoK? "Diet and exercise." We love you Del Rey.

Anime News Network

Justin Sevakis helping with question-answer stuff

[EDIT: Gia let me know during Podtoid-san today that this was previously announced. Oops!] Quite ironically, there was also some news out of the center of anime news themselves, Anime News Network, during their (self-)celebratory 10th Anniversary panel. Namely, the web site, which has already pursued some mode of video presence on the web, will now be working to license new series from Japan and provide them online. There will be free, low-quality videos streaming on the web site, and $3 high-quality (presumably DRM-free) episodes, in a pricing scheme suspiciously similar to that of asian media site CrunchyRoll.

The only shows that will be on the service as of right now are three Media Blasters titles: Girls High, Kite Liberator, and Ramen Fighter Miki. While I'll admit my personal skepticism on their ability to pull this off, New Media Director and Founder Justin Sevakis says, regarding release dates, "simultaneous is our goal." Subbing before the show comes out? I think that requires a bit more leverage than ANN has over Japanese companies. Maybe I'm wrong.

Red Steel 2 to utilize Wii MotionPlus

Topics: , , ,
In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, Ubisoft’s Alain Corre revealed that the next Red Steel title is already in development and will make use of Nintendo’s new Wii MotionPlus add-on.

"Red Steel 2 has been in development for many months now, and [Wii MotionPlus] will help us be even more precise in what we do with the product. The Red Steel brand is strong - I think we released it on year one, and that people understood that it was a first try on new technology, technology that wasn't completely finished."

The Wii MotionPlus is a device which has caused quite a stir since its announcement at E3. It remains to be seen whether Nintendo’s latest peripheral will become the new standard for Wii owners, or if this device will segment the marketplace and place an unneeded strain on third party developers. Ubisoft seems to have cast their vote, now we shall wait and see.

Peggle bouncing onto DS

Topics: , , , ,
Peggle Last week at the Casual Connect summit Popcap’s CEO David Roberts announced that Peggle would be coming to the Nintendo DS. The project is managed by developer Q Entertainment, who has a solid track record in handheld development between Lumines (PSP) and Meteos (DS). Q and Popcap have also announced that the title will feature both new game modes and touch screen integration.

For those of you that haven’t already poured hours and hours of your life into this title, Peggle is a game that capitalizes on a simple premise: clearing orange blocks. Each level is littered with various dots and platforms, and it’s your task to take out the orange ones by bouncing tiny balls off of them. Think of it as sort of a mix between the arcade classic Breakout and The Price is Right’s Plinko. Check it out now on Steam, or later this year on XBLA.

Digital manga to be released via WiiWare

Topics: , , , , , , ,
Monster, by Naoki UrasawaAs reported in the New York Times yesterday, four of Japan’s major manga publishing houses have come together to form Librica, which will distribute manga via the Nintendo Wii’s WiiWare channel. The four houses that make up Librica are Kadokawa (Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion), Kodansha (Akira, Sailor Moon), Shueisha (Death Note, Dr. Slump), and Shogakukan (Monster, Mobile Police Patlabor).

Very few details are available about the service; however, Librica has stated that it’s open to adding more publishing houses after the service has launched. There is also talk internally of expanding the service to including distribution on the DS as well. As for information on the pricing structure or release date of the service, no details are yet available. And if you’re wondering whether the service will be coming state side, just keep in mind that all four of these publishing houses have seen their works released in North America.

This Week in Ani-Gamers ~ 7/13/08

Wow, this was a packed week indeed! Regardless of the reports from the show floor asserting that E3 sucked this year, we here at Ani-Gamers finally were able to muster up real-time coverage of Los Angeles's Electronics Entertainment Expo. No, we didn't have reporters at E3, but boy did live streaming of the press conferences help us out! Make sure to check out the three big posts that our new staff member Maxwell "Pigeonflu" McGee put up for Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony's press conferences, among the many other E3 news bites scattered around the blog.

We still need more votes in the poll on the sidebar, since at present there aren't enough to warrant a final decision on the news change. Read this post if you want to find out more.

Dead Rising shambling onto Wii

Topics: , , ,
The Famitsu scan

Broken in this week’s Weekly Famitsu magazine, Capcom’s zombie-bashing extravaganza, Dead Rising, is making its way to a Wii console near you. It's strange that this announcement was absent from both Nintendo and Capcom’s press conferences, and even stranger still that this title still hasn’t seen a PC release (Devil May Cry 4 and Lost Planet say “hello”).

From what can be gleamed in the Famitsu article, the title will be a port of the 360 game, with an emphasis on maintaining the massive zombie hordes of the original given the Wii’s, well, limitations. Naturally, there is also talk of some Wii motion control functionally as well. Hey, a little motion control didn’t hurt Resident Evil 4 now did it!

Sony's E3 2008 Conference Highlights

Topics: , , , , ,
Sony's E3 2008 press conference President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, Jack Tretton, spoke today at the Sony E3 press conference in Los Angeles. The focus of his presentation was less on game announcements and more focused on the new features of the PS3 and PSP. With 2008 being hailed as the year of the PS3, lets take a closer look at the information given at this event. Starting with video games, most of the games shown where in the form of a brief montage grouped off by console. Here's what was shown:

Resistance 2 (PS3): hailed as the biggest FPS of this year, the demo for Resistance 2 was all about scale. 8 player online co-op, 40 player multiplayer, massive levels, massive bosses, you get the idea.

Little Big Planet (PS3): an interesting and well executed showing of LBP had one of the game’s characters, Sack Boy, running through a custom-made level while highlighting the speaking points that Jack Tretton was discussing at the same time. October 2008 set as the release date.

Buzz: Quiz Show (PS3): more of the same, slated for a September 2008 release.

DC Universe Online (PS3): an MMORPG for the PS3 and PC, very little actual information was given, save for the fact that you can be either a hero or villain. No release information given.

God of War III (PS3): a brief trailer was shown, no gameplay footage however. Release date set for sometime next year.

Infamous (PS3): this dark superhero title is set for a Spring 2009 release date.

MAG (Massive Action Game) (PS3): the last game shown at the Sony event, MAG is an online FPS which supports a whopping 256 players divided up into 8 teams. Skill trees for individual characters were mentioned, as well as a progressive campaign mode. Release information was missing.

PS3 Game Montage: Quantum of Solace, MGS4, Socom: Confrontation, Ghostbusters, SCIV, The Agency, Naruto: Storm, Mirror’s Edge, Resident Evil 5, SingStar, Guitar Hero: World Tour, NBA08: The Inside, Killzone 2. These titles are all said to be coming later this year.

Resistance Retribution (PSP): a brief trailer was shown which had you controlling your hero in a third-person perspective. The game was dated for Spring 2009.

PSP Game Montage: Patapon 2, LocoRoco 2, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Madden 09, NBA09: The Inside, Super Stardust Portable, Lego Batman, Buzz: Master Quiz, and Valkaria Chronicles. These titles are coming between this and next year.

Ratchet and Clank Future: Quest for Booty (PSN): this expansion for the original R&C Future will be available for download from the PSN store this summer for $14.99.

PSN Game Montage: Crash Commandos, Fat Princess, Pixeljunk: Eden, Pain: Amusement Park, Flower, Siren: Blood Curse, Ragdoll Kung Fu: Fists of Plastic. No general release information given.

PS2 Game Montage: Madden 09, Tiger Woods 09, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Warriors Orochi, SingStar: Pop Star 2, Yakuza 2, Madden XX, Mercenaries 2. These games, Tretton said 130 PS2 games total, will be release in 2008.

Also announced during the conference was the formation of the PS3 Greatest Hits series. Greatest Hits titles will retail for $29.99.

Tretton also spoke at length about the streamlining process Sony has been doing with their PSN network. Now you will have only a single PSN log-in account to take you anywhere in the service whether you’re on your PC, PS3, or PSP.

Also unveiled for the PSN was a new video distribution service. This service will allow PS3 owners to rent or buy movies or TV shows on their PS3 in either HD or stand definition. Content that you’ve purchased can also be viewed on the PSP. (Ed: America's largest anime distributor, FUNimation, is listed as one of the partners bringing videos to the service)

A new pay-per-view automotive enthusiast channel was also announced as part of Gran Turismo V: Prologue. The service starts August 1st and will available within PSN, presumably, for the owners of GTV: Prologue.

The $399.99 80GB PS3 was also officially announced and is coming later this year.

Phew, that was a lot to cover, but now the big three are finished. It’s been an interesting E3 to follow thus far, with more to come both today and tomorrow. Personally, I’m going to go enjoy a little break from all the news and go play some games!

Nintendo's E3 2008 Conference Highlights

Nintendo's E3 2008 press conference

Today Nintendo held their E3 press conference at the Los Angeles convention center where they displayed an eclectic array of titles for both the DS and Wii.

Reggie, Miamoto, Iwata, and Nintendo’s VP of sales, Cammie Dunaway, all made an appearance to talk about how Nintendo has created a “paradigm shift” within the industry. They also talked about how Nintendo needs to continue innovating and pushing the industry forward in the years to come. Here were the major gaming announcements:

Shaun White Snowboarding (Wii): an Ubisoft title using the Wii’s balance board which is set to arrive by the year’s end exclusively on the Wii.

Animal Crossing: City Folk (Wii): set to arrive on the Wii by year’s end, the game will include a new “Wii Speak” voice chat feature as well as the ability to send messages using a full keyboard in-game.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Wii): slated for holiday 2008, light saber duels using the wii-mote were shown.

Rayman Raving Rabbits: TV Party (Wii): set to arrive Fall 2008, balance board integration was shown.

Call of Duty: World at War (Wii): "coming soon" says the trailer, co-op play was mentioned as well.

Guitar Hero on Tour: Decades (DS): set for sometime this Fall, the ability to share songs between the two DS titles was mentioned.

Spore Creatures (DS): touted as the only non-PC Spore title that will be available this year, includes the Spore creatures creator and the ability to trade creatures.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (DS): another title for this holiday season, this title will be set in Liberty City and feature the “free roaming” gameplay of the previous GTA titles.

Pokemon Rangers: Shadows of Almia (DS): release date set for November 10, 2008.

Cooking Navi (DS): set for November 2008, not so much a game as it is an interactive cook book.

Wii Sports Resort (Wii): plans are for a global release next Spring, the mini-games that were shown were: flying disk, a Wave Race 64-esq game, and a sword fighting game.

Wii Music (Wii): no release date plans were mentioned, the game was said to include 50 instruments, including drums, sax, piano, guitar, and violin. There can be up to 4 players at a time and no grades or scores are given during the game, it’s all about just playing the music and having fun with your friends. The ability to record video and create your own music video was mentioned.

To go back to Wii Sports Resort for a moment, a new device for the wii-mote was announced that will be included with this game: the Wii Motion Plus. Basically, it’s a small device that plugs into the back of your wii-mote and increases the precision and accuracy of the device.

Also worth noting was a comment made by Nintendo’s president Satoru Iwata who said that the teams that brought us the Mario and Zelda titles shall “bring new titles to the Wii.” How will these titles manifest themselves, we shall have to wait and see.

Microsoft's E3 2008 Conference Highlights

Microsoft's E3 2008 press conference Yesterday, Microsoft flexed their gaming muscle during their E3 press conference in Los Angeles. Included in their showing were a few exclusive downloadable content deals, several release dates, and one big announcement that’s blowing up the internet (you know that one). Here are the gaming highlights from yesterday’s monumental event:

Fallout 3: exclusive downloadable content confirmed for 360 and Games for Windows.

Gears of War 2: release date set for November 7, 2008. The new “Horde” mode, a co-op endurance mode where 5 players are pitted against a relentless onslaught of enemy forces, was also shown.

Fable 2: release date set for sometime in October, 2008; online co-op was confirmed and will be accessed in-game by approaching floating purple orbs which represent the location of your friends in their game.

Resident Evil 5: release date confirmed for March 13, 2009; online co-op was confirmed for this title as well.

Lips: from developer iNiS (Elite Beat Agents), Lips is shaping up to be a karaoke game similar to Sony’s SingStar - with one little addition: you can use your own music! Wireless microphones were also used during the demo and there was talk of motion sensing functionality.

Rock Bank 2: the full song list was revealed. (Ed: over 80 songs!)

Portal: Still Alive: this pseudo-sequel was confirmed as an exclusive for Xbox LIVE and is set to arrive sometime in 2008. The game is set to include new levels, challenge modes, achievements (of course), and the original single player mode as well.

XBLA: Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 set to arrive August 6, 2008 with a slew of new content including 4 person local co-op, along with 5 new game modes; Uno Rush was announced, Galaga Legions is coming from the folks that brought us Pac-Man Championship Edition, a South Park game (rumored to be a port of the N64 title), and Banjo-Kazooie (which really is a port of the N64 title).

JRPG’s: Infinite Undiscovery dated September 2, 2008; Last Remnant slated for a timed 360 exclusive for this holiday season; and Star Ocean: The Last Hope set for some time in Spring 2009.

Final Fantasy XIII: the BIG one, confirmed for 360 as Vampt Vo reported! While no official release date was given, the title is set to be released simultaneously on both the 360 and PS3 in Europe and North America. Interesting to note that Japan, which will be receiving this title first, was left out of this simultaneous launch window and it looks like there will be some delay between the Japanese PS3 exclusive release and the Europe/America duel release. Also worth mentioning is the Final Fantasy Versus XIII is still slated as a PS3 exclusive at this time.

Gaming announcements aside, Microsoft also announced a deal with Netfilx which will allow Xbox Live Gold members, who are also Netflix subscribers, to access the entire Netflix movie database from the console at no additional charge. A reworking of the 360’s dashboard was shown, as well as the new Avatars which shall function pretty similarly to Nintendo’s Miis (you’ll be able to customize them and use them in certain games).

It was a strong showing by Microsoft indeed. Now, how will Nintendo and Sony stack up?
