This Month in Ani-Gamers ~ September 2009

Welcome to this slightly belated edition of This Month in Ani-Gamers. If you missed out on the action last month, here's the rundown: Ink and I duked it out over Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad in a review and Otakudemia article about the anime. Want to find out which one of us liked it and which one didn't? Well, you'll have to read the articles to find out! Finally, I attended the New York Anime Festival (with no lack of transportation difficulty) and wrote up quite a lot of coverage. The con report is on its way out the door, so while you wait for that, you might as well catch up on the news from the con.

This next month has quite a few surprises in store for Ani-Gamers. New staff members are in the near-final stages of discussion, and we might also be adding a new column to our lineup. No promises yet, but keep your eyes peeled for some interesting developments here at Ani-Gamers.

Having already said more than I probably should have on that topic, I think it's time that I wrapped up this episode of This Month in Ani-Gamers and directed you past the break, where you can find fat-free, heart-healthy links to all of September's posts.

This Month in Ani-Gamers ~ August 2009

Well, I did promise that we had a lot more Otakon coverage on the way. (After all, August did see the publication of our written con report, podcast con report, full press conference audio, and Travis Willingham interview, among our various panel reports!) But luckily, as of today I can officially say that there will be no more talk about Otakon here at Ani-Gamers... at least until next year's con. Besides that, this month also saw the North American release of the newest surefire-hit Studio Ghibli anime, Ponyo. Make sure you read Uncle Yo's review of the film, written up in double-time after having seen the movie.

Of course, I'd also like to apologize for any recent or future lapses in our volume of articles, since I've been dealing with moving in for college, and the adjustment has made it temporarily more difficult to update. Don't worry though – pretty soon I should be back into the groove of things!

And with that, how about you head on down past the break and check out this month's posts?

This Month in Ani-Gamers ~ July 2009

To begin, I'd like to apologize for the past week's drought of posts. I was away from home for two weeks, and while I had scheduled posts for the first week, it turned out that I had very few chances to access the web and schedule more posts for the following week during my stay. Worry not – many, many more posts are in the pipeline.

Anyway, this month was all about Otakon for us here at Ani-Gamers. Three of our staff writers (Uncle Yo, Ink and I) attended the convention in mid-July, the former as a performer and panelist, and the latter two as press. As such, we got a glut of content from the convention that we've been posting as fast as possible without going too far outside our typical publishing timeline. Expect many more Otakon posts in the next week or so, though I will certainly be speeding up the pace so we can quickly get back to regularly scheduled programming.

That's most of what is planned for this coming month of August. Ani-Gamers Podcast #018 is on its way out the door, there's an Otakon con report coming up, I'll be finishing up my Cowboy Bebop Impressions, and Ink will be continuing the Brotherhood Diaries. Check out July's posts after the break, and thanks, as always, for reading!

Can you feel the summer air? Here in the state of New Jersey, things are finally looking "summer-y" after a few weeks of torrential rain and bad conditions. But don't fear, beloved readers! The beautiful sunshine will not keep this intrepid editor from his keyboard! (After all, everybody knows that otaku are like vampires in that we burn in sunlight. But we're also not sparkling pretty-boys, so I guess we're not vampires in the modern, post-Twilight sense.)

But what about discussion of things you actually care about, like this site? This month marked Uncle Yo, Ink, and I all attending AnimeNEXT, which would have been super-exciting if we ever got a chance to stand in the same room together. That convention report is coming soon, but while we're on the topic, I also posted my report on the Sakura Matsuri this past month. It was late, but I'm pretty proud of the result.

We've been a little light on the reviews lately in favor of publishing a greater variety of articles, such as our E3 coverage, which was written completely based on second-hand reports, but which is nonetheless filled with interesting insights. If you prefer one particular type of article (i.e. reviews, editorials, news), be sure to let me know and I'll make sure that we publish more of it. We are, after all, here to serve you, dear reader.

But the question remains: What is going on next month? Well, as luck would have it, the month of July contains within its bowels (ew!) one of the largest anime conventions in the country, Otakon. I will be attending for the first time, and will be joined by Uncle Yo and Ink, as well as a number of other anime bloggers. The Reverse Thieves and some other friends will be sharing a room with me, which is sure to result in a whole bunch of crazy things that will likely be captured by my discerning podcast microphone.

Anyway, check out this month's posts after the break.

Spring is finally in full swing here on the East Coast, bringing with it green trees, blue skies, chirping birds, and all of those things that don't really bring out a particularly strong impulse to sit inside and punch letters into a computer. But how could we possibly resist our inner bloggers, when there's so much to write about? In the coming weeks, we've got convention reports, long-overdue feature articles, and of course, Ink's new column – Fullmetal Alchemist: The Brotherhood Diaries!

Outside of that, I've just settled my plans for my first ever weekend at Otakon in Baltimore, where you should be able to find Ink, Karl, and I come this July. And in the next week, you just might see a new staff member on the team, and a special promotion for a current one. Stay tuned for all the fantastic things up ahead.

If you weren't paying attention, this month had some great developments in anime, with the streaming of tons of new spring season anime series (discussed in Podcast #014), as well as the first in what will hopefully be a major trend of free manga online – Viz's preview of Rumiko Takahashi's Rin-ne. We also had some bittersweet news of Will Wright's leaving EA, and tragedy in CPM's bankruptcy. Two anime reviews, a comic book review, CPAC 2009 coverage, and TWO chances to win Schoolgirl Milky Crisis (Enter the blog contest and the podcast contest) round off a fantastic month here at Ani-Gamers.

If you're man enough, read about all of this month's posts after the break.

Hey there, readers. I hope you've been enjoying the posts over the last few weeks, despite the lower frequency of updates. I've tried to make sure that, since we're putting out less articles a week, the ones that we do put out are of better quality, so that you're still getting some good stuff from us week after week. On that topic, there are some nice feature articles in the pipeline that might finally see the light of day next month, so definitely watch out for those. Plus, we've got a contest coming up, and one has already started over on the Ani-Gamers Podcast.

In March, we had a bunch of reviews, for 5 Centimeters Per Second, the Afro Samurai video game, and much more. Some anime and game news trickled in as well, with news of Bioshock 2 and the stateside release date of Miyazaki's Ponyo movie. I missed my chance last week, but I might do a News Briefs post soon to round up our late coverage of the Game Developers Conference. Till next time, dear readers!

This Month in Ani-Gamers ~ February 2009

February was Comic Con month for us here at Ani-Gamers, with news, previews, and more from the massive New York Comic Con 2009 coming out throughout the month. (Don't forget to read my convention report!) Now that I've exhausted most of my NYCC content, we should be back to regularly scheduled programming in the future (excepting a few non-Comic Con-specific feature articles that I researched while at the con).

Other than that, I'm also looking to our future as a moneymaking blog by figuring out ways to optimize our ad structure so that I can pay our current and future staffers. Oh, and you might notice that the "On Deck" section is filling up down there. I've been meaning to weed through some of our old reviews (especially some of Karl's) for a while now, so expect them to be published pretty frequently in the coming weeks while I prepare some new feature articles.

February was fun, but March is bringing with it Castle Point Anime Convention, where Ink and I will be hosting an "Anime Blogging" panel. More details on that one as we prepare for the con. Thanks for reading, and make sure to check out all of this month's posts after the break.

This Month in Ani-Gamers ~ January 2009

Hey there, welcome to the first "This Month in Ani-Gamers" post. Unlike our previous column, "This Week in Ani-Gamers," I'll now be posting the latest stories on a monthly basis, along with some editorial commentary on where the site is headed.

On to business. In January, Ani-Gamers kicked off its first month of the year with a high concentration of editorial content like reviews, columns, and features. We announced our Top 3 Anime, Manga, and Games of the Year, and even talked about our favorite titles in the two-part Ani-Gamers Podcast #011 (part 1, part 2). Rounding it all off, Ink finally posted his second Otakudemia column, providing a brilliant look at Speed Grapher's noir themes. And yes, there was some big news, such as the announcement of the Cowboy Bebop Hollywood movie and the call to arms for Kamina as MTV's Baddest Badass.

In the future, Ani-Gamers will be moving toward a slightly more opinion-based model, meaning that we will balance our simple news posts with some more opinion content such as reviews, critiques, and columns. Will news go away? Of course not! How will our readers stay up-to-date with current events in geekdom without reading our site? Actually, don't answer that one.

Anyway, the Super Bowl party is getting started around here, so I've gotta take a break from blogging to pretend that I care about any football game that doesn't feature the Devil Bats. In the meantime, check out the month's posts after the break.

"This Week in Ani-Gamers," Newsletter goes monthly

Topics: , ,

Our sidebar poll ended with a rather small number of votes, so I didn't feel like there was enough data to really get a consensus on what our readers want to see for the new column. Still, I did my best to combine my personal opinion and the votes from the poll. As such, I've decided to move This Week in Ani-Gamers (and its corresponding newsletter) to a monthly format. For the very perceptive among you, you might realize that this will necessitate a name change. Yep, the new column will be called "This Month in Ani-Gamers," seeing as it's, you know, monthly.

All future entries will follow the same general format as they always have: an editorial note at the beginning about what's new at Ani-Gamers, followed by links to the articles posted over the course of the month, and a list of upcoming articles.

For anybody interested in signing up to receive "This Month in Ani-Gamers" through our email newsletter, click here.
